The Dr. Clifton Meador Community Health Leadership Award

About

The Dr. Clifton Meador Community Health Leadership Award is given to honor an individual in the community whose leadership and accomplishments have contributed significantly to improving access to quality health care for low-income, uninsured persons in Nashville and surrounding areas.

This award was named in honor of Dr. Clifton Meador who was also the first recipient in 2007. For most of his life, Dr. Clifton Meador’s medical degree allowed him to help heal the sick, but his passion for medicine went far beyond the white coat, stethoscope and medical degree.  He served as the executive director of the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance from 1999, when it was founded, until early 2012. The Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance played a prominent role in the formation of the Nashville Consortium of Safety Net Providers and still participates in an integral way today. Dr. Meador was a strong supporter of Bridges to Care, now Project Access Nashville, and remained a member of the Nashville Academy of Medicine for his full career.

This award is presented in partnership by the Safety Net Consortium of Middle Tennessee, the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance, and the Nashville Academy of Medicine. The award given is in the shape of a globe to honor the global mindset and far-reaching impact of the work that is done in our Nashville community every day.

Criteria: This award is given to one individual who has provided excellent contributions to advance the mission of the Safety Net Consortium of Middle Tennessee, specifically with a focus to further the work being done to serve the uninsured in our community.

Our History

The Consortium was founded with the purpose to provide access to appropriate levels of care for the uninsured population of Nashville, through the establishment of a system of information and care coordination. Established in May of 2000, our network began with all existing primary care safety net providers, six of the nine hospitals in Nashville, and the Metro Public Health Department of Nashville and Davidson County (MPHD). By September of 2001, we expanded to include all dental care, mental health care, and substance abuse care safety net providers. See our full historical timeline and get to know our growth and impact over the years.
